In Denmark, local and regional elections are held every four years. On election day, you vote for both your municipal and regional councils.
The local election (municipal)
The local election is for the municipal council (kommunalbestyrelse) in your municipality.
Denmark is divided into 98 municipalities (kommuner), each governed by a municipal council (byråd). This council is the highest local authority in your municipality. In Lolland, the municipal council makes decisions on everyday matters that affect your local community including schools and childcare, elderly care and social services, local roads, housing and urban planning, libraries, sports, and cultural activities etc.
The council is made up of elected representatives, and the mayor (borgmester) is chosen by and from among them.
The regional election
The regional election is for the regional council (regionsråd) in Region Zealand.
Denmark is also divided into five regions, and Lolland belongs to Region Zealand (Region Sjælland). Each region has a regional council (regionsråd), which is responsible for broader services that go beyond the individual municipalities.
The region council focuses on hospitals and healthcare services, regional public transport etc. While municipalities handle local matters, the regions ensure healthcare and coordination across larger geographic areas.
When is the next election?
The next local and regional elections will be held on Tuesday, 18 november 2025.
These elections take place every four years on the third Tuesday in November.
How long is the term for elected members?
Both municpal and regional council members are elected for 4 years. Their term begins on 1 January 2026 and ends on 31 December 2029.
