The Danish Way of Learning

One of the most important questions when settling into a new country is: What will school be like for my child? Danish public schools (the Folkeskole) offer free education for all children aged 6–16, but they also offer something more than academic instruction. They offer a way of learning that combines knowledge, curiosity, well-being and democratic values.

Trust and participation

In Denmark, education is built on trust and participation. Children are encouraged to ask questions, think independently, and share their opinions. While classrooms may feel informal compared to other countries, students call teachers by their first names and take part in discussions, reflecting mutual respect and a belief that active dialogue strengthens learning.

"Dannelse"

A central idea in Danish education is “dannelse” – the development of the whole person. Schools focus not only on academic skills such as reading, mathematics, and science, but also on empathy, responsibility, collaboration, and confidence. Children are supported in becoming thoughtful, capable, and engaged members of society.

Democracy

Democracy is not just taught; it is practiced. Most schools have a student council (elevråd), where pupils elect representatives and help shape school life. Through group work, shared projects, and classroom dialogue, students learn to listen to different perspectives and take responsibility for their community.

Play

Especially in the early years, play and learning go hand in hand. Play is seen as a powerful way to develop language, creativity, social skills, and problem-solving abilities. Outdoor activities, hands-on projects, and collaborative learning are natural parts of everyday school life. While the atmosphere may appear relaxed, schools follow clear national learning goals and maintain high academic standards.

Lolland International School

Here on Lolland, families can also choose Lolland International School, a public bilingual school that combines Danish educational values with an international perspective. Teaching takes place in both Danish and English, creating a supportive bridge between local community life and global opportunities. The school welcomes both Danish and international families and provides an inclusive environment where diversity is seen as a strength.
